The magic words for the Summer Reading Program at the Licking Library on Friday were, “I LOVE to read!”
The audience of 16 kids and 13 adults were asked to use those magic words throughout the performance of Marty the Magician.
His questions, stories and magic tricks were exuberantly responded to with those very words and much enthusiasm.
From Marty’s box of tricks the show began with him turning a box of crayons into flashy fabric flags. Then a large, brightly hued parrot was put into its card cage.
Audience participation was required with a disappearing ring; it was finally found, at last, in the doll of a set of Russian Nesting Dolls.
A new magic trick, learned just two weeks ago, was an animal adventure with baby alligators, kept in a “Danger” box. Again in keeping with the “Reading is a Passport to Countless Adventures,” Marty shared a story about seeing large alligators while living in Florida. A number was given by an audience member, the number six, this would be the number of crafted clothespin baby alligators, out of a total of eight, that would attach themselves to a length of rope suspended over their home box. Six were raised suspended on the rope from the box.
Marty’s personal first magic trick, interlocking Wedding Rings, was learned at the age of 10, and came from “Dai Vernon’s Symphony of the Rings,” by Lewis Ganson, a book he purchased for $2 and still keeps on hand after 51 years. An audience member perhaps performed his first magic trick, too, with the interlocking rings.
A five-year old accomplished what others could not, when she picked the correct puzzle piece to complete the dinosaur picture. It was magic!
A final card trick revealed the winning card, a Library Card that can be used as a passport to countless adventures.
Marty visited the Texas County Libraries from Ozark, on Friday.
