Flash flooding in Licking

Rain started overnight Sunday and into Monday in Licking, totaling around 4.5-inches or more. In a relatively flat community, the low spots were easily discernible by Monday evening, with pools of water several feet deep collecting in some places and with the creeks through town roaring their way northwest.

Some battled through the water to make it to their homes, others attempted to retrieve items from their yards before they were swept away. Still others looked at it as an opportunity for adventure, driving their trucks through streets overrun with water.

Old Ridge Street near North Main Street was also flooded Monday.

Two of the deeper spots were likely on Old Ridge Street, just east of North Main Street, and the end of Robnett Street, at its junction with Highway 32. But several streets saw water covering all or parts of them at some point during the deluge, as ditches and creeks overflowed.

For hours after the rain ceased, rainwater continued to drain from the east and south ends of town, leaving saturated ground in its wake. Forecasters are calling for more heavy rains by the weekend.
