Nature intensifies Independence Day fireworks show

Lightning coincided with the explosion of fireworks more than once Saturday evening at Deer Lick Park in Licking. Although it rained intermittently, people sought shelter as necessary and waited for the show.

Last year’s fireworks were delayed until August due to drought, and the potential was there for this year’s show to be delayed for the opposite – a thunderstorm with torrential rains.

The futurecast didn’t look promising for the evening, but the worst of the storms came around dark and skirted around town. It rained lightly several times, and not so lightly for a few minutes around 9 p.m., but for the most part, those enjoying vendors at the park or waiting for the fireworks were able to stay reasonably dry.

The lightning during the fireworks show was thrilling and captivating. In retrospect, the potential danger of a lightning strike likely should have concerned those attending, but none were noticed leaving.

Earlier in the evening, the park was full of celebrants, enjoying food, face painting and shopping with the vendors who were present. Children enjoyed the playground equipment as adults visited with friends and family.
