Weekly auction returns to Licking

The grand opening of DJ & DJ Auction Service Thursday evening was held at their location on Main Street in Licking. Auctioneer David James Grossenbacher, of Salem, and his son, David James Grossenbacher II (or DJ), have combined forces, and they plan to hold auctions at 118 S. Main Street every Thursday evening at 6 p.m.
David has been auctioneering since 2011, and loves the business. The Salem, Mo., native’s interest began while living in Jefferson City, where he owned a thrift store and attended storage unit auctions. As television shows about storage unit auctions became popular, bidding on units went higher, making it hard to turn a profit on his purchases. He decided to move to the other side of the business, and became an auctioneer so he could sell the units.
Holding weekly auctions in Licking utilizes his skills from both; he purchases storage units or other items, accepts consignments, and will hold a weekly auction to sell the items.
David’s wife, Christina, is also very involved in helping her husband and son launch their business. She explained that some items they will be auctioning will be new, some used. Overall items appeared clean and ready for purchase; David said if he gets a storage unit that contains items that are in poor condition, it goes to the dumpster, rather than trying to resell it.
A great variety of items was present for their first auction, with furniture (bed, crib, tables), appliances (including a washer and dryer), baby items (stroller, bouncer seat), toddler clothes, basketball shoes, boots, laptop, fishing gear, pocket knives, golf balls, fan pulls, lawn mowers, bicycles, and much more arranged throughout the building.
A concession stand will be available at the auction as well, offering hot dogs, hamburgers, and nachos for purchase if buyers get hungry.
