A custom rod, designed by Greg Darlington, left, was won by Seymouri C.

Saturday was free fishing for children at Montauk State Park.

A tent set up near the fish cleaning station registered children, gave them free fishing tags for the day, had drawings for prizes throughout the day and featured a seedling giveaway from George O. White State Forest Nursery. Nearby was an archery range with instructors helping children experience the sport.

Also on hand was the Montauk Rural Fire Department. Not only did they talk to children and give tours of their trucks, they also fixed a free hot dog lunch. Montauk Rural Fire Department is a volunteer department, and the time they donate annually to the spring Kids Free Fishing Day at the park is greatly appreciated.

At 1 p.m., all gathered near the lunch tent for the drawings for the Bessie the Bear rod holder and a custom rod. Catherine P. won the rod holder and will have her name added to the Bessie the Bear plaque at the lodge. Seymouri C. won the custom rod. The Missouri Trout Fisherman’s Association sponsors the drawings. Duane Crawford made the rod holder this year based on a design by Denny Bessie, who made them until he was no longer physically able to do so. Greg Darlington custom made the rod, which was won by Seymouri C.

The Summer’s End Free Fishing Day at Montauk State Park is scheduled for August 8.
