Fishing fun at Montauk

Young fishers and their families gathered in front of the lodge as names were drawn for the derby winners.

A Kids’ Trout Derby was held Saturday at Montauk State Park. Participation was good for the annual event, and children with their families filled the area in front of the lodge at 2 p.m. for the awarding of prizes.
Young fishermen and women brought their fish to the lodge and had them weighed, then their names were placed in the heaviest stringer competition or the heaviest fish competition for the 11 and under age group or the 12 to 15 age group. The winner for each category was drawn from those names. Brenden Martin received the gift certificate for the 11 and under Heavy Fish. Owen Frazier was chosen as the Heaviest Stringer age 11 and under. Carter Rydgig’s name was drawn as the 12 to 15 Heavy Fish. The 12 to 15 Heavy Stringer winner was Kaedyn Miller.
The Ray Parker Memorial Trophy winners were also drawn and these individuals were presented their trophies by the family of the late Ray Parker. These winners will also have their names placed on plaques inside the lodge. Paislee Churchman and Ben Sinak were drawn in the 11 and under category as Heaviest Stringer and Heaviest Fish, respectively. In the 12 to 15 age group, Lonny Higgins was drawn for the Heaviest Fish, and Emerson Haas, the great-great-granddaughter of Ray Parker, was drawn for the Heaviest Stringer.

Young fishers continued to arrive to weigh their heavy fish or their stringer Saturday in the final fifteen minutes of the derby, keeping Darlene Griffith busy at the scales.
