Shafer Road Project approved by legislature, heads to Governor’s desk

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – A $2,000,000 appropriation for critical improvements to Shafer Road in Texas and Phelps counties has been approved by both the Missouri House and Senate as part of the FY26 state budget. The funding, outlined in Section 4.490, now awaits final approval from Governor Mike Kehoe.

Shafer Road is a key connector for the region, providing access to the George O. White State Forest Nursery – a major state facility supporting Missouri’s forestry and conservation efforts. The road also hosts FFA tractor pulls and truck pulls, which draw wide community participation and promote agricultural education. In addition, it supports daily travel for numerous farms, small businesses and residential areas.

“This project is vital to our region’s safety, economy and quality of life,” said Rep. Bennie Cook (R-Houston). “Now that the House and Senate have passed it, we need the Governor’s support to make it a reality.”
